Bowie/Mitchellville Alumni Chapter Brothers and Kappa Leaguers participated in the 1st Annual Neighborhood Fest where we served the community by giving out backpacks and information about our upcoming Kappa League 2022-2023 year.

Father's Day Awards

In honor of Father's Day 2023, the Kappa League for the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter BMAC Nupes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was the proud recipient of the The Fatherhood Community Engagement Award.

This award was presented by the Prince George's County Department of Family Services/Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Division on behalf of the continued dedication and commitment the BMAC Kappa League Committee has devoted towards the growth and development of the young men throughout Prince George's County.

Additionally, BMAC's own Brother Marlon Selmon was also the recipient of the 2023 Fatherhood Honors Award as presented by the Prince George's County Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys in recognition of the spirit of fatherhood Brother Selmon promotes both at home as well as within our community.

DF/KL Brunch

On Sunday, June 11th, The Diamond Foundation and Kappa League Committee of The Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni (MD) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. hosted a phenomenal Kappa League Senior Scholarship Brunch and Award Ceremony. The BMAC Diamond Foundation honored our deserving Kappa League Seniors in presenting them with over $10,000.00 in scholarship funds.

The following BMAC Kappa League Seniors received congratulatory book scholarships while announcing their college of choice:o 1. Donald Wesley Clarke (Morehouse College)o 2. This event also showcased the many gifts and talents of our BMAC Kappa Leaguers as well as commemorated another successful year for the BMAC Kappa League/Guide Right programs as our Kappa Leaguers were presented with many superlative awards and certificates of achievement.

Golfing Tutorial Outing

On Sunday, June 4th, under the guise of beautiful weather, the Kappa Leaguers of the BMAC Nupes  Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. received valuable insight on the game of golf  as part of our BMAC Kappa League Golfing Tutorial Outing at Oak Creek Golf Club.

According to the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA), there are countless benefits for our youth to obtain from the game of golf, including:• social and business opportunities• great exercise and exposure to sunlight• fosters a healthy sense of competition• relieve stress and improve mental health• non-contact sport

Brother James Frye, a certified golf professional, provided over three hours of live instruction on many critical components of golfing including: putting; driving; hand and foot placement; hand-eye coordination; power discretion; and aiming techniques.

Our Kappa Leaguers also received knowledge on the many intangible benefits of relationship building and networking opportunities while on the golf course. For many of our Kappa Leaguers, it was their initial introduction to the game of golf. As always, exposure is an essential element towards the educational enlightenment and elevation of our young men.

Fishing Outing

On Saturday, June 3rd,  the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter (BMAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. enjoyed a tour of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay as part of our BMAC Kappa League Fishing Outing.

The BMAC Kappa Leaguers boarded a chartered boat in Anne Arundel County, MD, and embraced the aquatic views as they ventured to Talbot County, MD in search of rock fish on Saint Michaels Island. Our young men did not leave empty-handed as their catch was plenty, and their collective bonding experience was immeasurable.

And for many of our Kappa Leaguers, it was both their first time fishing as well as their first time aboard a charter boat.

Bowie, Maryland Parade

On Saturday, May 27th, the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. paid tribute and honor to the countless sacrifices of our servicemen and women as participants in the City of Bowie's Memorial Day Parade.

As a result of their civic engagement, the City of Bowie acknowledged our Kappa Leaguers by awarding them 1st Place for the Best Non-Profit Float.

Financial Literacy Forum

On Saturday, May 20th, the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter BMAC Nupes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. gained valuable insight and awareness on the importance of monetary goals and fiscal responsibility as part of our BMAC Kappa League Financial Literacy Forum.

Our guest panelists included:• Terrence Hayes (Press Secretary, Department of Veterans Affairs/Presidential Appointee)• Brother Gregory White (Program Management Analyst at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)/Harvard graduate)• Kevyn Scott (Multi-Franchise Business Owner/College Football Academic All-American)

Our discussion topics focused on:• The difference between needs vs. wants• Should more young black men consider joining the U.S. military?• Racial disparities in U.S. Household incomes• The value of an Ivy League education• The road from football to business entrepreneurism• Disciplining your desires and decisions• Balling on a budget• Pivoting toward your purpose

During the second half, our Kappa Leaguers were joined virtually by actor Brother Damian Young. Brother Young stars as Michael Jordan in the critically acclaimed movie "AIR". Brother Young also has an accredited role in Hulu's latest remake of the iconic film "White Men Can't Jump." Brother Young shed some light on the many adversities he faced while transitioning from a budding basketball career into the movie/TV industry.

Mother's Day Brunch

On Saturday, May 13th, in partnership with the Prince George's County Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys, the Kappa League of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter BMAC Nupes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. facilitated a Mother's Day Brunch for the residents of Shepherd's Cove Homeless Shelter for Women & Children.

Our young men were able to serve the residents a gourmet meal while offering a warm word of encouragement to all of the mothers. The residents were beyond elated by this kind gesture.

This exposure also elevated the measure of appreciation that our Kappa Leaguers have for the countless sacrifices made by their own mothers. Giving is still the greatest expression of gratitude.

Police/Youth Forum

On Saturday, May 6th, the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. embraced the value of public safety and social awareness as well as the importance of their own livelihood during encounters with law enforcement as part of our BMAC Kappa League Police & Youth Engagement Forum that was held on the campus of Bowie State University.

The Forum included the following guest panelists:• John D. B. Carr /Prince George’s County Sheriff• Dwayne A. Preston/Deputy Chief, Bowie Police Department• Sam Quon Elira Sr., Esq./Founding partner of the Elira Law Firm, LLC  • Brother Harry Freeman III/Senior Special Agent/DHS ICE Office of Responsibility (OPR)• Hassan B. Ahmed, Esq./Founder and principal attorney at the Law Office of Hassan B. Ahmed, LLCThe Forum focused on: community policing; law enforcement recruitment and retention of minority candidates; confronting racial disparities in the criminal justice system; selective accountable; probable cause versus reasonable suspicion; and the need to restore respect, trust, and communication between the police and the communities they serve.

Clothing Drive

On Saturday, April 29th, the Brothers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter (BMAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. donated new and gently used dress clothing items as part of the BMAC Kappa League Clothing Drive initiative on the campus of Bowie State University.

The list of donated items included: suits, sport coats, dress shoes, dress socks, dress shirts, dress pants, bow ties, neckties,  tie clips, cufflinks, and belts. Our Kappa Leaguers also received instructional insight and knowledge from the Brothers of BMAC regarding proper sizing, color coordination, as well as appropriate care and cleaning techniques for clothing.

This clothing drive initiative is multipurposed as both our BMAC Kappa Leaguers as well as the students at Bowie State University would surely benefit and look their best on future: college admission interviews; on campus jobs; internships; offsite job interviews; and social outings and formal gatherings.

Quiz Bowl

On Saturday, April 15th, the Kappa League Quiz Bowl Team for the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. BMAC Nupes participated in the annual Metro Area DMV Kappa League Quiz Bowl Tournament on the campus of Bowie State University.

The Quiz Bowl is a Jeopardy-style trivia game that tests the knowledge and acumen of our young men in the field of Black History.The BMAC Kappa League Quiz Bowl Team gave a valiant effort and placed 2nd in this year's competition. This is a remarkable achievement and truly a testament of our young men's willingness to commit to the process.

Although the end result was not the optimal goal, our Quiz Bowl Team Members learned priceless life lessons on determination, resiliency, perseverance, and focus. These life lessons will surely aid in their maturation and better prepare them for the game of life.

Major thanks to the huge number of fellow BMAC Kappa Leaguers who also came out to show support and solidarity to our Quiz Bowl team.

Kappa League Session

On Saturday, April 1st,  Kappa Leaguers from the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. participated in another impactful session to assist in their maturation as part of our "Appearance & Accountability Forum."

Our Kappa Leaguers received affirmations, instruction, simulation, and tutelage on pertinent self-care necessities and life-skills that will certainly aid in their transition to manhood for years to come.

MoMENtum Conference

On Saturday, March 18th, the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. participated in the 2023 MoMENtum Conference in partnership with the Prince George's County Department of Family Services.

This year's Conference was entitled, "Men Realigning and Reconnecting with our Community." The conference sought to elevate the dialogue to educate men and young males on healthy relationships. Our Kappa Leaguers received knowledge, tutelage, and insight on breaking the cycle of domestic violence as well as the value of effective communication styles to sustain relationships.

Nearly 40 Kappa Leaguers engaged with local county dignitaries, perused resource tables, and participated in an impactful youth panel discussion on finding your purpose by overcoming your fears.

CREED III Movie Outing

On Saturday, March 4th, the Kappa League of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter (MD) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. celebrated the spirit of brotherhood while watching the movie CREED III during an impactful social outing.

Nearly 40 Kappa Leaguers came out for another chance to bond, build, and bear witness to black excellence on the big screen.

Kappa Leaguers Embrace the Full CIAA HBCU Experience

Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. journeyed to Baltimore for the CIAA Tournament Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Games.

During the men's game, our Kappa Leaguers witnessed the Winston-Salem State University Rams defeat the Lincoln University (PA) Lions 62-57 in a hard-fought battle. Then, the Kappa Leaguers watched in amazement as Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick personified the true essence of hip-hop royalty.

Thereafter, the women took center stage as our Kappa Leaguers looked on as Elizabeth City State University trampled Shaw University 55-40 for their first ever CIAA Women's Basketball Championship.

Prior to the game, our Kappa Leaguers embraced the full HBCU experience and atmosphere during the CIAA Fan Fest at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Bowling Social Outing

The Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi celebrated President's Day while participating in our BMAC Kappa League Bowling Social Outing. Our Kappa Leaguers not only enjoyed the game of bowling, but they also broke bread together and bonded with one another.

More than 20 Kappa Leaguers enabled us to fulfill one of the fundamental objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi, which is "to promote the spiritual, social, intellectual, and moral welfare of members.

Self-Branding/Empowering Expressions

Our esteemed panelists included: Brother Ulysses Stretch Garrett  (WHUR 96.3 FM radio personality); Mr. Gino LaGrant  (the Founder and President of Write Now Academy); and Mr. Roger Muntu (International Broadcast Journalist for Voice of America). Each of our panelists provided empowering personal accounts on moments of resiliency that defined their self-identity.

Our Kappa Leaguers also received insight and clarity on: the value of self-worth; the maturing aspects of discipline and humility; defining yourself for yourself;  situational awareness when utilizing social media platforms; and the dangers of media-driven stereotypes and false perceptions of black men.

Our young men were also broken into small groups with our respective panelists to understand the value and importance of developing an "Elevator Pitch."After we distributed our first ever BMAC Kappa League jackets, a group of our Kappa Leaguers also attended the final home games for the Bowie State Men's and Women's Basketball Teams as they faced off against Lincoln University.

More than 45 Kappa Leaguers were greatly impacted today.

Iron Sharpens Iron - Accountability

The Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. participated in another multi-purposed growth enrichment opportunity.

During the first half, our Kappa Leaguers were joined by author and columnist Mr. Terence Dorsey and his son, Terence "TJ" Dorsey Jr. (DeMatha High School) as part of our "Iron Sharpens Iron -Youth Accountability" Forum.

On Saturday, January 28th, the BMAC Kappa Leaguers continued their Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Program as sponsored by the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Once again, our Kappa Leaguers were joined by Reverend Michelle L. Agnew of Community Builders LTD.

More than 35 Kappa Leaguers gained insight on the impact of HIV infection, STDs, self-esteem awareness, and appropriate responses to peer pressure and partner pressure.

Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. had the pleasure to participate in our "No Challenge/No Change Forum". Our Kappa Leaguers were joined by Dr. Bernard Toney Jr., DMSc, PA-C.

Dr. Toney detailed challenging moments of his upbringing where he literally hit rock bottom prior to fulfilling a distinguished and decorated military career. Our Kappa Leaguers learned the power of resiliency and tenacity as well as the value of humility.

Dr. Toney currently works at the National Institutes of Health with the Vascular Medicine Team. Dr. Toney was also a White House Medical Unit Medical Officer from 2019 to 2022 where he provided medical care and contingency planning for the President, Vice President, and First Lady.

Kappa Leaguers Bring The Ultimate Competition

In spirit of the third phase (Competition) of the National Kappa League, earlier today, the Kappa Leaguers of the Bowie-Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. were able to rejuvenate their competitive spirits as they embraced the essence of brotherhood through the game of basketball.

More than 20 Kappa Leaguers were able to engage and enjoy one another's company. The ability to make memories is indeed the simplest joy of mentorship.

Prevention and Protection

During the first half, our Kappa Leaguers were joined by Reverend Michelle L. Agnew (Community Builders LTD) as part of our continual Sexual Risk Abstinence/Avoidance Education Program (sponsored by the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene). Our young men learned: the benefits of responsible behavior; identified reasons why teens have sex; recognized barriers to achieving their goals; and gained insight on the physical, emotional, and sexual development that occurs during puberty.

During the second half, our Kappa Leaguers were joined by Kenny Nero, Jr., the founder, owner, and head instructor at Bowie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Our Kappa Leaguers were put through a spirited training regimen and simulation where they learned a multitude of techniques and defensive tactics that embodied the principles of Gracie (Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu.

Mr. Shawn Dove. Mr. Dove is the author of:  "I Too Am America: On Loving and Leading Black Men and Boys". Mr. Dove also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), a national membership organization committed to improving the life outcomes for Black men and boys.
